While waiting the falling stars night we are again preparing our shield/postcard for mosquito repell candles.

Last year with the heroes of surf we were in a meditating mood, gazing the horizon and the stars.

Aspettando la notte delle stelle cadenti stiamo di nuovo organizzandoci con le cartoline scudo per le candeline anti-zanzara.

L'anno scorso con gli eroi del surf eravamo di umore meditativo, guardando l'orizzonte e le stelle.

This year we decided to celebrate a first class star of world literature, Mrs. Jane Austen (1775 – 1817).

All her novels are very enjoyable and among them “Pride and Prejudice” in a masterpiece that has oceanic crowds of estimators (like us). It has been translated for the screen several times but for us the best adaptation to date is the BBC mini serie starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth in the main roles, we have seen it on dvd several times and have fond memories of watching it with our mother.

On our postcard appearing from thin paper we will see Elisabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in front of the beautiful mansion of Pemberley.

Quest'anno abbiamo deciso di rendere omaggio ad una stella di prima grandezza della letteratura mondiale , Jane Austen (1775 – 1817).

Tutti i suoi romanzi sono una lettura molto piacevole, ma “Orgoglio e pregiudizio” è un capolavoro e vanta folle oceaniche di estimatori, noi compresi. E' stato portato sullo schermo diverse volte, ma la migliore è secondo noi la trasposizione della BBC che ha prodotto una miniserie con Jennifer Ehle e Colin Firth nei ruoli principali, l'abbiamo vista in dvd molte volte e abbiamo bei ricordi di quando la vedevamo con nostra madre.

Sulla nostra cartolina appariranno del nulla, beh dal cartoncino, Elisabeth Bennet e Mr. Darcy davanti alla meravigliosa villa di Pemberley.

Big Wednesday and stars. Un Mercoledì da leoni e stelle

Once more and once again the falling stars night is approaching so we are back with our shield/postcard for mosquito repell candles.

Last year all our friends liked our dream with whales and so we decided to keep the sea theme.

This year August the tenth will be a wednesday so this time surfers gazing at the horizon will appear when the candels will be in place (we hope you remember the classic movie!). 3 stars and the lyrics of a famous song by D. Bowie reminding us the temporary and fragile nature of falling stars and life alike complete the design!

Ancora una volta eccoci di nuovo ad aspettare la notte delle stelle cadenti e ad organizzarci con le cartoline scudo per le candeline anti-zanzara.

L'anno scorso il sogno con la balena è piaciuto a tutti i nostri amici e abbiamo deciso di rimanere nel tema marino.

Quest'anno il 10 Agosto cade di mercoledì, così saranno dei surfisti che scrutano l'orizzonte ad apparire quando si accende la candelina ( speriamo ricordiate il classico film !)

3 stelle e la strofa di una famosa canzone di David Bowie a ricordare la caducità delle stelle (e non solo) completano il design!

We are back to our appointment with the falling stars night, and with our postcard / windshield to protect the tea candles mosquito repellent ! We can say that one postcard has already arrived and so it looks all should work well with the mail this year.

Anche quest’anno è venuto il momento di  godersi la notte delle stelle cadenti e quindi  della cartolina / paravento per proteggere le candeline anti zanzara. Posso dire che la prima cartolina è già arrivata e quindi anche questa volta sembra tutto funzioni.

Last postcard had a literary inspiration, this time we looked in songs for the theme of our creation. There are many songs with stars in their lyrics, one even has a hat full of stars, but the point was to wish when you see the falling star…so the inspiration came from the Oscar winning song “When you wish upon a star” from the Disney’s  “Pinocchio” (1940) that is recognized by critics and movies historians as a masterpiece of animation art.

L’anno scorso l’ispirazione era letteraria, invece per questa nuova cartolina abbiamo cercato l’idea fra le canzoni. Ci sono tante canzoni che parlano di stelle, una ha persino un cappello pieno di stelle, ma il punto era esprimere un desiderio e allora la scelta è caduta sulla canzone Premio Oscar 1940 “When you wish upon a star” dal film Disney “Pinocchio”, riconosciuto  dai critici e dagli storici del  cinema  come  un capolavoro dell’animazione.

Valentine Card. Biglietto per San Valentino

Per Natale ho ricevuto un bellissimo disco di  Michael Ball. Siamo grandi fan di questo cantante inglese che abbiamo avuto la fortuna di vedere in un paio di musical a Londra. Una delle canzoni del disco è la famosa “Love changes everything”  e  anche se sono sempre stata un po’ allergica ai cuoricini la canzone mi ha ispirato un biglietto per San Valentino.

For Christmas I received a beautiful  Michael Ball’s  cd. We are fond of this singer and we were lucky enough to see him performing  in London in a couple of musicals. One of the tracks of the disc is the famous “Love changes everything” and even if  I have  always been quite allergic to hearts (decorations) the song inspired me a Valentine card.

Questo biglietto pop up è accompagnato da una borsettina di cartone con decorazioni coordinate per coloro che vogliono condividere qualche cioccolatino oltre al biglietto, o da una più semplice busta per quelli che pensano di investire in un anello di diamanti…

Falling stars / Stelle cadenti

As last year we created a postcard to send to friends to celebrate the falling stars night, August 10th.
This time our postcard/windshield for “anti-mosquitoes” candels is inspired by an Italian poetry classic entitled “X august” by Giovanni Pascoli, this is a poem that everybody knows in Italy as it is studied in primary or secondary schools. It is a very sad poem, the poet says he knows why during San Lorenzo night the sky is crying stars and tells the autobiographical story of his father killed on his way home (and the horse arrived without him).


Come l'’anno scorso abbiamo fatto una cartolina per celebrare la notte delle stelle cadenti, il dieci Agosto, san Lorenzo. Questa volta la nostra cartolina è ispirata alla celeberrima poesia “X Agosto” di Pascoli.

 San Lorenzo , io lo so perché tanto
di stelle per l'aria tranquilla
arde e cade, perché si gran pianto
nel concavo cielo sfavilla.

 

 

 

Last year all the postcards but one arrived to destination, this time we hope to get a 100% score.

How to make an American Quilt/ Picnic. Come fare un quilt/picnic americano

The old movie “How to make an American Quilt” came back to me while I was designing some invitations for a Picnic. The idea of staying  under the pear tree (as a friend of mine put it) comfortably sitting on a quilted picnic blanket is very appealing to me , so the invitations shows some samplers: the bear foot, the first I learned,  the Lemoyne star, one of my favorites, and the card trick that is  always very elegant , especially in blue. Mentre stavo progettando degli inviti ad un picnic mi è tornato in mente il vecchio film “Come fare un quilt americano” . L’idea di stare “sotto il pero”(come dice un mio amico), seduta comodamente su una coperta da picnic fatta a quilt mi piace molto, così gli inviti mostrano tre samplers:  la zampa d’orso, il primo pattern che ho imparato, la stella di Lemoyne, uno dei miei preferiti, e il trucco di carte che è sempre molto elegante, specie in blu.

I cut the patterns with my plotter and then glued it all together; to simulate the stitches that are necessary to show the quilted nature of the sampler I just draw them freehand with several gel pens. Ho tagliato il pattern con il mio plotter e poi ho incollato il tutto; per simulare i punti  che distinguono il quilt dal semplice patchwork li ho disegnati a mano libera con diverse penne gel.

The invitations are completed by the cake with glaze and cherry on a silver stand and  the title “great Picnic” that is also showing an ant…hard to avoid guest at every picnic. This ant is the most American part of the card, in fact the stamp is an old one my brother bought for me when he was living in L.A., California. Gli inviti sono quindi completati dalla torta a strati con glassa e ciliegina su un’alzatina d’argento e dal titolo “ Grande picnic” che mostra una formica…l’ospite difficile da evitare ad ogni picnic. Questa formica è il tocco più americano di tutto l’invito, infatti è un vecchio timbro che mio fratello mi aveva comperato quando stava a Los Angeles, California.
